5 National Australian Schools Wine Show University of Adelaide 9-12 A competition for wines made at or in association with Australian schools. 6 National Australian University Crops Competition (AUCC) Grain Growers Association Undergraduate students The AUCC is a new initiative in the cropping industry that aims to increase the awareness and connectivity between universities, degrees and with the rural industry. The AUCC will achieve this by improving the technical knowledge and practical skill development of university undergraduates. Over 2 ˝ days students work through the following components of the competition:

9 National Cows create Careers Dairy Australia Years 7-11 Promotes career and education opportunities in the dairy industry across vocational and university pathways. Local farmers, local dairy industry professionals (eg vet), Dairy company field officers, Agronomists, and Cheesemakers work with students to teach them about different aspects of the dairy industry. 165 schools and 5,000+ students across six states. 11 National DEEDI Hermitage Research Station Schools' Plant Science Competition E Department of Employment Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI) - Agriculture, Food and Tourism and Regional Services P-12 This is an annual competition that aims to stimulate an interest in agriculture and science in young people and promote agricultural science as an exciting, long-term career choice.  Each year a plant science topic, related to current research projects at Hermitage Research Station, is chosen and a hands-on experiment and other activities are designed for students to carry out in the classroom.  The competition provides opportunities for students to be involved in and report on a range of agricultural issues such climate, water use efficiency, managing insect pests and plant breeding to improve yield and quality in crops. 14 National Education Kit on Merino Breeding Australian Wool Innovation 9-12 An education resource kit describing the culmination of ten years of work by Merino industry identities and researchers. The kit aims to give agriculture students a thorough understanding of breeding methods within the Merino industry and how these can impact on productivity and profitability. Key components of the kit include: a tailored PowerPoint presentation on project methods and outcomes; an interview with SARDI Principal Research Scientist, Dr Forbes Brien; and video footage of the project in action. 17 National Farm Ready DAFF Primary producers and Primary Industries A part of the Australia's Farming Future initiative, FarmReady is a national program, and available to all primary industries. Eligible participants are able to claim up to $1500 per financial year to attend FarmReady approved courses, with additional funding available for associated reasonable travel, accommodation and childcare expenses. Approved courses focus on areas designed to equip primary producers with the tools to manage and adapt to the impacts of climate change. FarmReady offers two types of support, FarmReady Reimbursement Grants and FarmReady Industry Grants. Industry Grants of up to $80 000 are available to eligible industry, primary producer or natural resource management groups to develop skills and strategies in response to the impacts of climate change. 18 National E (NSW) Fishcare NSW I&I NSW Schools, Community and angling public Fishcare is a community-based program, funded by government, in which recreational fishers assist the governing agency with educating the community and angling public about the rules and ethics of fishing sustainably. In NSW this is the flagship program of the Recreational Fishing Trusts. Over 380 TAFE accredited volunteers are involved in face-to-face education with anglers to advise them about NSW fishing rules and to promote responsible fishing practices. Volunteers help in a range of activities, such as fishing workshops, fishing for sport, on water advisory in dedicated fishcare vessels, catch surveys and attendance at community events. 20 National Get into Genes E Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics and the Molecular Plant Breeding CRC School students Years 9-12 Teachers Pre-service teachers An interactive education program for secondary school students highlighting the application of biotechnology to crop improvement. Enthusiastic post-graduate science students teach molecular biology tools and techniques to the participants, inspiring them to consider tertiary studies and careers in agricultural biotechnology. Workshops are closely linked with current secondary school curricula. Recent developments include teacher and pre-service teacher professional development workshops plus workshops for senior students on 'issues in gene technology'.  Primarily run on campus at the University of Adelaide, La Trobe University Bundoora and the University of Melbourne Parkville, Get into Genes also runs rural and regional outreach programs. 21 National High Schools´ Poultry Industry Education competition QPIF & WPSA (Qld sub-branch) 7-12 A national competition (now in its tenth year) that allows students to learn about the wide variety and range of careers in the poultry industry. In 2009 students from 28 Queensland, New South Wales and South Australian schools participated. Nambour State High School students won the 2009 competition for their report on studying the effect of different feeds on egg quality and production. 24 National Jet and Emma Farm Management Series K-12 Dairy Youth Australia Inc K to 12 - mainly upper primary and secondary and highly suitable background material for undergrad animal science and veterinary students 'Getting Down and Dirty on the Farm with Jet and Emma'  - Education Program for K to 12 published on the web by Landlearn NSW as a PowerPoint series follows the journey of two farm apprentices undertaking a dairy traineeship as part of their HSC. By working at dairies which make the most of available technology and the latest science and research they have been able to extend their practical on-ground learning back into the classroom. Changes to the way farmers manage their properties have moved faster than educational resource development. 30 National MESA Coasts and Marine Schools Project MESA K-12 A professional development program for teachers to develop skills and strategies for including marine education programs in school curricula.  The 15 modules and the supporting materials, including Black Line Masters and a Field Activities Guide, are designed to promote inclusion of coastal and marine content in school programs from Kindergarten to Year 12 and incorporates currently available teaching materials and resources. It is in modular form for flexibility of use and to cater for differences in the needs of educators. 31 National Molecular Plant Breeding CRC Teacher Resources Molecular Plant Breeding Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) Secondary school teachers and students Online education resources including freely accessible games, animated stories, puzzles and interactives for middle-years students. Topics include bioinformatics, gene mapping, inheritance, dominant and recessive alleles, as well as plant biology and an introduction to plants and plant traits that are important in Australian agriculture. 32 National National Digital Resource Network and the National Pool of Digital Curriculum Resources Curriculum Corporation, The Learning Federation K-12 THE LE@RNING FEDERATION (TLF) was a national project funded by all the ministers of education in Australia. TLF is now known as National Digital Resource Network (NDLRN). Curriculum Corporation - a not for profit ministerial owned company - manages the NDLRN. Over 8,900 digital curriculum resources have been produced or licensed (National Pool of Digital Curriculum Resources - NPDCR). All NPDCR content is available free to all Australian and New Zealand schools. Tertiary institutions engaged in pre-service teacher training also have access to the NPDCR. The project now provides the opportunity for parties to make their content discoverable within the NPDCR. Content must be 'Free for Education'. 37 National Post high school education & training grants for rural youth Country Education Foundation of Australia (CEFA) High School Leavers and Young People up to the age of 21years of age CEFA assisted rural communities to establish local education foundations. The education foundations raise funds and provide post- high school education and training grants to local youth. CEFA assists each local education foundation to become established by providing $10,000 in funding over the first three years as well as providing ongoing support and guidance as well as access to many other education scholarships.  There are now 37 local education foundations around Australia that collectively have provided 1047 student grants totalling $1.1 million. 39 National Scientists in Schools E CSIRO Education K-12 Scientists in Schools, including its sub-program Mathematicians in Schools, creates and supports long-term partnerships between teachers in primary and secondary schools across Australia and scientists or mathematicians.  Teachers and scientists or mathematicians who register are matched to form partnerships and work together in a way that suits both partners, with the aim of providing inspiration, fun and learning for students, teachers, and scientists or mathematicians alike. 41 National Sunbeam Future Farmers Program Rural Skills Australia (RSA) and Sunbeam Employers and their Production Horticulture Certificate II Australian Apprentices A program that supports Australian farmers by encouraging young people to take up full-time, part-time or school-based Certificate II Production Horticulture Apprenticeships.  Sunbeam will donate $1,000 towards the cost of their apprenticeship to each approved farmer under the Future Farmers Program.  In addition, Sunbeam will commit another $1,000 bonus payment, payable to each participating apprentice on completion of their Certificate II in Production Horticulture. Applications are now open Australia-wide, available to employers of Certificate II Production Horticulture apprentices. The program is open to all growers, not just those within the Sunbeam network.  Applications close 30 April 2010. 43 National The National All Breeds Youth Camp (January each year) National Centre for Dairy Education - Australia 10-12 The five-day program aims to support young people as they develop their interest in the dairy industry.  Over the five days of the camp, participants cover breeding, nutrition, communication, showmanship and judging skills. Sessions involve farm walks, activities and the famous 'Mystery Tour'. Participants have the opportunity to care for a heifer calf throughout the week. 44 National The Primary Industry Centre for Science Education (PICSE) E University of Tasmania (UTas) Science Teachers and Students from Grades 4 to 12; primary industry sector employers that support industry placement activities PICSE is a national collaboration between and funded by the Federal Government, universities, regional primary industries, national R&D Corporations, national agribusiness, regional research institutes, local community organisations, schools and State Government Departments. E I&I NSW Vocational education and training sector especially trainers, weed professionals What does your garden grow? developed by the CRC for Australian Weed Management provides resources and 'train the trainer' opportunities. The resources provide an overview of the importance of weeds and their impact on our unique Australian environment.  The resources cover introductory information on where weeds are a problem, how weeds spread and the theory and practice behind control measures.  A key section relates to planting less weedy plants in our gardens as an alternative to those with weedy characteristics. A new follow-up course, What pesky plant is that?, provides skills for plant identification utilising the Environmental Weeds of Australia DVD. 52 New South Wales Bridging the gap between city and country Tocal College 9-12 A $5 million refurbishment and remodelling of several buildings at Tocal College's dairy site will result in a new agricultural training centre. $500,000 will also be spent at the college's other campus, Murrumbidgee Rural Studies Centre at Yanco. Some buildings will also be refurbished into short-stay accommodation for visiting school groups. TOCAL is focusing on how institutions adapt to changing needs such as climate change, skills shortages, energy efficiency and social inclusion by providing residential facilities for people in isolated areas. The finished artworks must explore and communicate contrasting stories about the future of agriculture in their local area under the theme 'Love it Or Lose It'.

80 New South Wales Unischool Steer Project University of Western Sydney High school students The Unischools Steer Challenge is a collaborative project between the School of Natural Sciences at the UWS Hawkesbury Campus and participating high schools. High school students have the opportunity to prepare a weaner steer to meet market specifications. They are responsible for the feeding and welfare of the steer, picking up valuable skills in animal care and cattle management in the process. This is a hands-on project based on the Weed Warriors program. The resource models the activity of growing a biocontrol for bitou bush, using a games-based approach and extensive use of video. The resource is suitable for individual or group learning, homework, whole class discussions, demonstrations or investigations. 99 Queensland City-Rural School partnership St Columba's PS, Brisbane and South Burnett Catholic College, Kingaroy P-6 St Columba's PS runs a program with South Burnett Catholic College, Kingaroy, to promote mutual understanding.  This is a whole-of-year program. 'Rural Discovery Day' provides the opportunity for the Brisbane students to begin gathering knowledge about primary industries.  The students spend a day at the RNA showgrounds learning about life on a dairy farm at Kilcoy, fire ants, horses, sugarcane farming, cotton growing, fruit growing, pig raising and farm safety. 103 Queensland Go Agro! Cotton & Grain Careers in the Central Highlands Central Highlands cropping industry and agricultural teachers. Year 10 An initiative covering Central Highlands (Emerald, Springsure, Capella, Clermont, Alpha). Two annual field trips are offered to Year 10 students: Emerald district field trip (March), South-East Queensland field trip (August/October). The program provides students with first-hand experience of the careers and study pathways available in cropping industries. 106 Queensland PACE (Pathways to Agricultural Careers and Education) Australian Agricultural College Corporation (AACC) and Capricornia School of Distance Education (CSODE) Grades 11 and 12 The annual education and training program started in April 2009 for the Emerald area. Grade 11 and 12 students are assisted in achieving a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) while enrolled in AQF Certificates in Agriculture at AACC. It provides an alternative for senior school students who wish to leave school in Grade 11/12, and who have a passion for Agriculture as a career however their parents/guardians require them to gain a QCE. The program is delivered by distance using the computer suite and teleconference lessons at AACC. Students can be residential or non-residential. 120 Queensland TASTE Australian Agricultural College Corporation (AACC) Years 10-12 TASTE is held annually at each of the four AACC campuses during the September/October school holidays. The 4-day program allows young people to explore agricultural college life and engage in training for different types of rural industry careers. 128 Queensland Weed Warriors Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries Years 3-7 Weed Warriors is a national program for schools that uses biological control to engage and educate Australia's future land managers. Weed Warriors links schools to local weed officers and other weed specialists. Together they plan, act and evaluate solutions to weed problems, greatly contributing to the stewardship of their local environment. Weed Warriors Queensland is best suited to regions experiencing problems with lantana, cat's claw creeper, harrisia cactus, blue heliotrope, salvinia, water hyacinth or water lettuce. 130 Queensland Wine College, Stanthorpe Stanthorpe State High School 9-12 The Queensland College of Wine Tourism functions as a wine industry training centre and operates as a commercial vineyard, winery, tourist centre, seminar and function facility - all based on site at Stanthorpe State High School.  The college involves all levels of business in the wine industry, including hospitality and tourism, viticulture, wine making and marketing and cellar door operations. Seven participating Queensland schools, collectively known as the 'Gateway Schools', are part of the wine tourism project and use the college for their studies.  They are Stanthorpe State High School, Centenary Heights State High School at Toowoomba, Kingaroy State High School, Murgon State High School, Nudgee College, Sheldon College in the Redlands and Tamborine Mountain State High School - schools that already have links to the state's wine regions. 169 Tasmania National Forest Learning Centre Forest Education Foundation Inc. All primary and secondary levels, plus contribution to career education and university teacher training programs. The National Forest Learning Centre explores themes based on understanding forest systems and forestry processes, using student-centred activities for groups of all ages. The Royal Melbourne Show features a free and interactive education program, bringing the country to the city and exploring a range of agricultural and related industries. 197 Western Australia Low Stress Stock Handling Training Department of Agriculture and Food Years 10-12 A low stress stock handling training activity was conducted in 2008 at Denmark Agricultural College to assess changes in attitude and behaviour. The activity was 'one off' undertaken as part of a Curtin University student's honours project.  There has been no further work in this area in WA, however Kevin de Witte from Animal Health Australia (AHA) is coordinating a project that is developing a generic resource package on stock handling training with the intention that it can be accessed by anyone who needs it. 198 Western Australia Naturaliste Marine Discovery Centre and MarineDiscovery-West Department of Fisheries WA P-12 MarineDiscoveryWest is the WA Department of Fisheries' community and schools education program. It operates at the Naturaliste Marine Discovery Centre, and at many other locations around the State including Busselton, Bunbury and Albany. The education team and WA Fisheries volunteers develop and deliver learning programs about WA's unique and fragile aquatic environments, our precious fisheries, the science that underpins management, and how to fish and live sustainably. Learning programs are based on current science and data generated by scientific research, and are supported by the WA Department of Fisheries Research Division and the WA Museum. 200 Western Australia Kelmscott Senior High School Primary Agriculture Program Department of Education and Training WA K-6 and adults in metropolitan Perth Norm Hammond coordinates a highly rated agricultural awareness and education program for primary aged children across metropolitan Perth. He uses media, mail outs, personal visitation and staff in-service to involve 4000 children and 800 accompanying adults in the program annually. The program involves working with farm staff, developing on-site facilities (i.e. playground and recreational area, Heritage and Primary activity areas) and maintaining an Educational Resource Centre.  The 3-hectare farm facility provides for high school agricultural education and provides an education facility for primary schools. The farm includes fenced paddocks with beef and dairy herds, flocks of sheep, emus and goats, a custom built facility to display milking and shearing, machinery shed with a range of equipment, chicken brooder, and a vegetable garden and orchard. 204 Western Australia Vocational Training in Aquaculture Denmark High School Years 8-10 Denmark HS offers students programs that connect their school science to their everyday lives.  The science curriculum has been developed to cater for the specific needs of the students attending the school. The school offers units in aquaculture to students in year 10, enabling them to achieve the outcomes of the Working Scientifically, Natural and Processed Materials, Energy and Change, and Life and Living strands of the Science Outcome Statements.  The integrated nature of the program models real-life experiences in science, while still maintaining a focus on students' learning and their achievement of the science outcomes. 209 Western Australia Lockridge Senior High School Farm Department of Education and Training WA K-12 The School Farm at Lockridge Senior High School is a 25 hectare property of which 4.5 hectares are fully irrigated providing for beef, dairy cattle, prime lamb production, superfine Merino sheep, laying and breeding poultry, and a fully equipped aquaculture facility. 212 Western Australia Avondale Discovery Farm National Trust of Australia (WA) K-12 and general community The Avondale Discovery Farm can be visited by individual families, school groups and casual visitors. There is a myriad of seasonal activities to be seen including seeding progams, spring hay making, sheep shearing and summer grain harvest. Avondale is a good example of sustainable agriculture in action. Trees are being planted according to a catchment plan to reduce the ground water table and provide 'highways' for native fauna, creek lines are being stabilised, remnant vegetation is being protected, drainage and water collection has been thoughtfully designed to minimise erosion and where possible high water using cereal and legume varieties are included in the crop rotations.
